Understanding Common Fertility Acronyms: A Quick Guide

Navigating the world of fertility can feel like learning a new language. With so many acronyms and terms, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Here's a quick guide to some of the most common fertility-related acronyms you will likely see mentioned in our Facebook Community!

1. BFP (Big Fat Positive)

This is the moment everyone trying to conceive (TTC) hopes for—a positive pregnancy test!

2. BFN (Big Fat Negative)

Unfortunately, not all tests come out positive. BFN refers to a negative pregnancy test.

3. DPO (Days Post Ovulation)

This acronym is used to count the days since ovulation, helping you determine when to take a pregnancy test.

4. EWCM (Egg White Cervical Mucus)

EWCM is a type of cervical mucus that resembles raw egg whites, often indicating the most fertile time in your cycle.

5. LP (Luteal Phase)

The luteal phase occurs after ovulation and before your period, typically lasting around 14 days. It’s during this phase that implantation happens if conception has occurred.

6. OPK (Ovulation Predictor Kit)

An OPK is a test that detects the surge in luteinizing hormone (LH) to predict when you are approaching ovulation. Unfortunately, OPKs (or LH tests) cannot identify the full fertile window, nor can they confirm that you will or did ovulate.

7. TTC (Trying to Conceive)

This term is widely used in the fertility community to describe the journey of trying to get pregnant.

8. TW (Trigger Warning)

Trigger Warning is used at the start of a post if the post in our Facebook Community contains sensitive news, such as a pregnancy announcement or mention of a loss/miscarriage.

9. AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone)

Anti-Müllerian Hormone is a hormone frequently tested to estimate the egg reserve. While helpful for predicting future fertility and for dosing stimulation meds for IVF cycles, AMH is not able to predict your ability to conceive naturally.

10. FV (Fertile Valley)

FV stands for fertile valley, which represents the fertile window in kegg readings. The fertile valley is a key period during your cycle when you’re most likely to conceive. kegg helps you identify this crucial window by monitoring changes in cervical mucus and vaginal environment, offering a more personalized approach to tracking fertility.

By understanding these acronyms, you’ll be better equipped to navigate your fertility journey, whether you're just starting out or are deep in the process of TTC. With tools like kegg, tracking your Fertile Valley (FV) can be a game-changer, giving you valuable insights into your cycle and boosting your chances of achieving that BFP!
